Pokemon Rumble World

Pokemon Rumble World

If you’re expecting the Rumble sub-series to have improved at all since it’s inception in 2009, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Pokemon Rumble World is more of the same dribbling awfulness we’ve come to expect. You’re still exploring the same linear levels and battling hordes of enemy toy Pokemon. You still have only one attack. One. It can’t be comboed, even with itself. It’s just one attack that you use over and over again with no variation whatsoever. Some toy Pokemon will have two attacks, but, again, they can’t be used together. It’s just a different button to mash if you get bored of mashing the other one. Whoopee. Sometimes, you’ll fight a boss. You’d think they’d be harder or more interesting to fight than normal enemies, but no! They’re the same thing, only bigger and with a lot more health, which means you can’t button mash your way through them like you could with the regular enemies. You might have to move out the way while the boss charges their attack for the requisite ten and a half minutes, which’ll give you plenty of time to deal with all the ineffectual ADs the game throws at you in a sad attempt to make the fight more difficult. Damn. Someone call up Sun Tzu so he can write Art of War: Pokemon Rumble World Edition.

Pokemon Rumble World

So, the combat is dull and insipid, with no depth or complexity to offer, except the token Pokemon type match-up mechanic. Pokemon Rumble World Grass beats water, water beats fire, and fire beats grass. You get the idea. Even that doesn’t amount to much. Using a super effective attack makes all the difference between enemies getting blown away like a trailer in a tornado and a trailer that’s been propped up by a few sticks. But, I kind of get the feeling Pokemon Rumble World was meant to be more of a collect-a-thon than a beat’em-up. Like most Pokemon games, a lot of the allure comes from collecting all the pocketable monsters you can get your hands on. But whereas other Pokemon games would base capturing a Pokemon on, say, I dunno skill, Rumble leaves it solely in the hands of Lady Luck. Sometimes you’ll be going through a level and sometimes an enemy Pokemon will turn into a helpless toy upon defeat, allowing you to pick it up for later use. There’s no rhyme or reason to this. It’s completely random, with the player having precious little input in the equation.
